ASSIGNMENT 07
ENVIRONMENT & CONTEXT

Using Ladybug Tools in Grasshopper for Daylighting and Radiation analysis on the canopy geometry.
The canopy is designed to suspend in the courtyard with its corners anchored to specified elements in the facades of Higgins.
The analysis will be crucial in implementing openings in the canopy and stimulate effects and atmosphere that it will generate with sun exposure.

ASSIGNMENT 06
GRAVITY & STRUCTURE

The sculptural shell sits at an unused and
un-walkable area of the courtyard outside Higgins Hall. It serves to provide cover and a clear circulatory route, differentiating a path for people and bikes.

The Shell is designed to have some of its end point attached to the Higgins Hall as fixed point, therefore the whole structure acts as a timber-framed grid shell. By looking at aspects such as Displacement, Utilization, Normal Force and Bending Moment under different load condition, we try to understand the weak point of this structural system through the analysis diagram we got from Karamba.

ASSIGNMENT 05
ANNOTATE & FABRICATE

Color gradient describes panel skew angel analysis.

Model is assembled of laser cut mylar pieces which were first set to be printed with the line work, color, and tags- then set up to be cut on the laser cutter. The process required precise alignment between the printed mylar sheet and laser bed.

Lessons learned: for future needs to repeat this fabrication process, there needs to be some kind of account for misalignment tolerance for the pieces from the print to the laser bed due to the difficulties of lining the geometry up perfectly.

A solution may be to widen the colored area of the panel and remove boundaries lines from the print file to give some level of tolerance for misalignment in the two step process

ASSIGNMENT 04
OPTIMIZE & COMPROMISE

Kangaroo allows for optimization in the geometry to control and limit planarity, vertex lengths, and angles. This is especially advantageous if streamlining the design for fabrication as limiting factors to the design can save production cost and fabrication labor. However, this compromises aspects of the geometry such as form and control.

ASSIGNMENT 03
ANALYSIS & COMMUNICATION

Grasshopper makes analyzing geometry extremely quick and convenient. However, it is a little difficult to process the tremendous amount of data that's been analyzed in the relaxation geometry. Though, I imagine some of the analysis would become helpful when constructing these geometries through any method, 3d printing, etc.

ASSIGNMENT 02
TOPOLOGY & TESSELLATION

Certain tessellation geometries worked better in the kangaroo relaxation than others. First ran a simple relaxation for each tessellation pattern then played with attractor points and anchors.

Analyzed face area, height, and normal direction.

ASSIGNMENT 01
TOPOLOGY & TESSELLATION

Need more practice with list management in mapping tile patterns to grid. Learned data flow and component work flow. For many patterns, the color gradient was difficult to control effectively.. Is this due to the scale of the geometry?

Will look into this. Also noticed some loose colorization anomalies in some patterns such that a stray shape was colored differently despite having the identical geometry as neighboring pieces.
